Day of Caring

by Vickie S. Watson, Community Relations Specialist

May I just put emphasis on one word in the title?  Day of Caring

My heart swells every year when United Way of Marshall County’s Day of Caring rolls around in September.  I get so excited at the prospect of a community coming together to work for the greater good of the nonprofit agencies and organizations served by United Way.

I get the distinct honor of being intricately involved in seeing firsthand what people do for Hospice of Marshall County-Shepherd’s Cove.  As people gather into our Community Room for their assignments, I just see an ocean of smiling faces.  I see people excited to be a part of something much bigger than themselves – to be the hands and feet of God.  I see people ready to go out in the searing heat to pull weeds, wash windows, wash down rocking chairs and gazebos, and to readily serve a patient who has a need for yard work or some kind of housekeeping.  I see a group from a local business share their amazing musical talents with our patients and staff in Shepherd’s Cove and beyond.  I see people making craft items for our patients.  I see people gathering donations for various projects.  I see people helping people.  I see lives touching lives.  I see fingerprints being left on the hearts and lives of those we serve.  I see God at work.  I stand it awe – every…single…year!

“Thank you” is simply not enough.  But I think this scripture from the Message Bible says it quite well:

A Love That Will Grow

Every time you cross my mind, I break out in exclamations of thanks to God. Each exclamation is a trigger to prayer. I find myself praying for you with a glad heart. I am so pleased that you have continued on in this with us, believing and proclaiming God’s Message, from the day you heard it right up to the present. There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears. — Philippians 1:3-6 (MSG)
