Volunteer with Us

Anyone can volunteer and make a difference in the lives of families served by Shepherd’s Cove Hospice. Each person has their own unique gifts and talents that can be used to serve others. Some general categories of volunteer opportunities include:

Volunteer Chaplain 

Provide spiritual support to patients and families through prayer, guidance, scripture reading, religious rituals, and discussing spiritual matters. Basic, direct patient care, and specialty training required.

  Inpatient Unit   Homecare   Facilities
 

Patient Support

Assist with any of the following for patients in our home care program, our inpatient unit, local assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Basic, direct patient care, and specialty training required.

 

Making special deliveries to the patient/family with our Get Acquainted Bags, monthly crafts, and celebration flowers.

Patient companionship and caregiver relief – sitting with the patient for companionship, helping them write letters or cards, preparing and delivering snacks or meals, reading to the patient, and/or calling the patient weekly to check on them. This also allows the caregiver time out of the home.
Transportation for patient/caregiver for appointments or errands Help patient/family create memories with pictures and photo albums
Provide haircuts for the patients (only available for licensed beauticians) Provide basic lawn care for patients
Assist patients with pet care and foster pet care Running errands for the patient/family
Provide music for patients/families Create digital recordings
Veteran-to-Veteran Program – Veteran volunteers can serve veteran patients through companionship, emotional support, deliveries, transportation, and running errands  

Help staff fulfill patients’ last wishes.

 

Inpatient Unit

Assist in our in-patient hospice unit. Basic, direct patient care, and specialty training required.

IPU desk support, answer telephones, doorbells, and call buttons Assist staff with patients as needed or relieve caregivers to allow them time for rest or to run errands
Visit with patients and families Deliver meal trays
Assist patients at meal time Assist with IPU laundry

 

Grief Support

Assist staff in grief support services with the following. Basic, direct patient care, and specialty training required.

Follow-up with families by making calls and sending cards over a 13-month period after a patient’s death. SCH can provide postage and cards. Help with Camp HOPE grief support camp for children and families
Assist staff in co-facilitating grief support groups Direct administrative support
 

Credentialed Healthcare Provider

 

Office Support Basic (*and direct patient care) training required. 
Assist with newsletter and invitation mailings by stuffing envelopes, attaching labels, etc. Data entry for fundraising events, volunteer time sheets, and other various projects
Scanning and filing for home care and the inpatient unit* Assembling packets/notebooks
Stocking medical supplies* Answering telephones*

 

Events Basic training only required. 
Race to Remember volunteers have multiple opportunities, including assembling packets, early packet pick-up events, race set- up/clean-up, registration, traffic control, cheerleading, manning water stations, etc.  

Lights of Love volunteers assist staff with set-up, baking cookies, serving hot chocolate, parking, and greeting.

Hopeful Hearts volunteers help decorate, set-up/clean-up, and serve the meal. Assist with in-office event preparations
Assist with veteran-related events Camp HOPE

 

Community Relations Basic training only required. 
Visit area senior centers, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities to assist with BINGO, music, devotions, and arts/crafts (not related to SCH patient care) Wrap Christmas presents for senior tours of SCH at Christmastime.
Street team – Help disseminate information in your geographical area and sphere of influence. Help spread the message of SCH at health fairs/event booths
Baking cookies/goodies
Building Maintenance and Support Basic training only required. 
Minor building repair / carpentry Gardening and weeding flower beds
Plumbing Electrical work
Moving furniture Carpentry

Thrift Shoppe

Help receive donations, sort and hang clothes, stock shelves, clean donations, and assist customers.

 

Craft Club

Make crafts, blankets, quilts, and other items to be delivered to our patients.

 

Miscellaneous Support Basic training only required. 
Aluminum can collection Organizing storage spaces
Making floral arrangements (to break down and arrange donated flowers for patients when they are delivered to SCH)  Assisting kitchen staff with set-up and clean-up for any catered event
